5 Recruiting Habits That Are Holding Back Your Hiring Success

If you find that your recruiting efforts are not producing the desired results, it’s tempting to blame a lack of quality candidates. But is it possible that the true fault lies in your process? Consider if you are guilty of any of these recruiting mistakes and take steps to eliminate them.

Not defining your needs. What are you hoping to accomplish with the hire? Are you blindly replacing a lost employee without considering what your company or department needs and what it doesn’t? If you last filled the position five years ago, think of how much your industry, organization or the economy has changed since. Look for candidates with today’s skills who can help you solve current problems.

Shortchanging the job posting. Too many employers make a list of job duties, post them online, and wonder why they get no response – or the wrong response. A job post is a marketing piece. It’s advertising. It has to sell, not put candidates to sleep. Picture your ideal candidate. What you would say to encourage them to meet with you? Why is your company a great place to work? How can they use their talents? Include all that in your job posting. Speak their language! Not only will you get more attention from ideal candidates, you’ll likely get less from those who are not a good fit.

Slow hiring process. The best candidates will have a lot of options. They’ll be interviewing at multiple places and may be juggling offers. If you don’t keep candidates in the loop every step of the way, you’ll probably lose them – at least the best ones. Keep them updated throughout the process and keep the process as concise as practical.

Not trying something new. If your current process isn’t working, switch it up! Step up your social media game, host an open house, speak at a local university. There are an infinite number of ways to find and attract talent. You’re only limited by your own imagination.

Not working with an expert. Why wouldn’t you call in an expert to handle recruiting for you while you concentrate on what you do best? They can take care of upfront work like recruiting and screening candidates. They help to reduce your risks by conducting skills tests and checking references. They’ll bring you the most highly qualified candidates. The toughest part of your job will be choosing which great candidate to hire!
